There are several variations of "Stand Six" but in one form or another, we liked what it means to us and to our principal audience, law enforcement officers. "Six" is a slang word for police so when someone is standing six or keeping six, they are watching out for the police. Now it is generally the bad guy who is standing watch as his buddies undertake any number of illegal activities and if he sees cops, he will hiss "six!" to alert his friends. In our case, it is us who is 'standing six' for police officers, ensuring that we are watching out for their best interests.
Brad McNish, our founder, often heard the phrase "Stand Six" when he was working as a police officer on the streets of the City of Calgary. It is a very familiar phrase to Canadian police officers – at least in our neck of the woods.
Another version of 'six' that is abundantly relevant to our philosophy is a military phrase 'I've got your six' which means I've got your back. If you listen carefully to any number of fighter pilot scenes in movies such as Top Gun, you'll hear the fighter in the 6 o'clock position tell his partner who is ahead of him that he has his six... he is watching his partner's back.
